PERFORMANCE & PREPARATION WORKSHOP

featuring Peter Johansson, Peter Zapalo & Robin Bousquet

Open to Skaters of All Levels, Parents & Coaches

Sunday, February 18th

8:00 AM to 2:30 PM  Sherwood Ice Arena

Please join us for CSFSC’s annual spring workshop! As the 2023-24 season comes to a close, it’s time to start planning for what lies ahead. This year, our goal is to provide access to experts in various fields of figure skating who can help our athletes in the PNW get a head start on the upcoming season. The focus of our workshop is to share techniques that will help skaters improve their on-ice performance, set appropriate goals for the off-season, and further educate them about injury prevention. We highly encourage parents and coaches to attend with their athletes. This workshop is open to skaters of all ages and abilities. Levels will be divided into three separate tracks: Aspire/LTS (Low), Next Gen (Med) & High Performance (High).

We are featuring THREE special guests, all who have tremendous experience within different areas of our sport. Decades of experience in long-term athlete development has reinforced their success with high performance competitors on Team USA. Please join us for an amazing workshop with Peter Johansson, Peter Zapalo, and Dr. Robin Bousquet.

Peter Johansson

Peter Johansson is a world-class coach and former international competitor for Sweden. His upbringing within the European training system as a former national champion and Olympian has set the foundation for his coaching philosophy. Along with his coaching partner, Mark Mitchell, he established an innovative training system in Boston, MA that capitalized on the benefits of small group training to expedite skill mastery and maximize training efficiency. They earned the 2003, 2006, and 2007 USFS/PSA Developmental Coach of the Year award as well as the 2006 U.S. Olympic Committee Developmental Coach of the Year award. Since then, Peter has played a significant role in high performance athlete development as a regular guest at U.S. Figure Skating’s training camps, including Jump Camp and National Development Camp. We are lucky to have him visit the Pacific Northwest and share his knowledge of on-ice performance skills and jump technique. He will be teaching on-ice and off-ice group classes in addition to private lessons before and after the workshop.

Peter Zapalo

Peter Zapalo is an exercise physiologist specializing in athlete high performance. He is a veteran of five Olympic Games, two of which he attended as part of the figure skating delegation for Team USA. While serving as the Sports Science and Medicine Director of U.S. Figure Skating for nearly 10 years, he gained considerable experience designing seasonal training plans and return-to-play progressions for competitors within the International Selection Pool. His work with elite level athletes all over the world has shaped his multi-faceted approach to athlete development, performance, and well-being. He will be giving presentations to athletes, coaches, and parents on topics of goal setting, seasonal planning, nutrition, long-term athlete development, and the demands of high performance.

Robin Bousquet

Dr. Robin Bousquet is a licensed physical therapist and former competitive ice skater. She has worked exclusively with kids experiencing orthopedic and sports injuries, as well as adult athletes, for over 25 years. In 2015, she accepted a Sports Physical Therapy rotation at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, where she worked with Olympic hopefuls in gymnastics, wrestling, cycling, figure skating, skeleton, and heptathlon. She also had the pleasure of working with Para-Olympic hopefuls in swimming and judo. She now has her own pediatric physical therapy clinic in Beaverton, OR where she serves many of Oregon’s top athletes. Inspire Physical Therapy is an official collaborating organization with “STOP Sport Injuries'', a national effort by the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine to support research and educational opportunities for athletes, coaches, and parents regarding injury prevention. Robin will be working with the athletes in groups on functional movement patterns, proper body alignment, and injury prevention. She will also be present for a parent/coach Q&A.  .
